High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission offers several advantages, making it the preferred choice
over traditional alternating current (AC) transmission in certain scenarios:
•
Reduced Transmission Losses: HVDC allows for efficient long-distance energy transmission with
significantly lower losses compared to AC transmission.
Over a distance of 3,000 km, transmission losses are kept below 10%.
•
Large Capacity: HVDC systems have substantial capacity, making them particularly attractive for
large-scale energy transmission projects.
A single modern HVDC line can currently transmit up to 12 gigawatts (GW), enough to power entire
cities or regions.
If power plant capacity were expanded to 10 GW and transmitted via an HVDC line, it could supply a
vast area with stable and efficient power.
